Upcycling home decor to give it a Vintage look
Here are three pieces of home decor that needed a new look before adding them into my cottagecore (farmcore, farmhouse, shabby cottage) displays. I wanted to create an aged, weathered, aged look on each piece.
Project #1 – Metal Planter
My goal for this piece is to give it a softer, aged look that will fit into a cozy cottage space.
I picked this piece up at one of our local thrift stores & paid $1.99.
After the planter was wiped down & clean, I applied two coats of Rustoleum Chalk Paint in Chiffon Cream. To distress this piece I took a damp cloth & wiped along the edges using a back & forth motion until I achieved the look I wanted. I have found with metal pieces this is my favorite distressing method & with the chalk paint, it makes it super easy.
Materials & tools I used for this DIY
- Rustoleum Chalk Paint in Chiffon Cream
- Paintbrush
- Cotton cloth & water to distress
Project #2 – Plaster Corbel
I achieved this aged look by adding layers of paint & wiping it back and repeat. I started off with a coat of DIY paint in Apothecary, then I applied Antique Copper acrylic paint along the edges & in all of the indentations. Then another coat of Apothecary & then I brushed on a bit more copper where it needed more depth. Using a round wax brush I applied DIY White Wax, waited for a couple of hours, and then I wiped it back and buffed it to a shine. I took a small amount of copper paint & went just along the edges to give it a finished look.
The white wax acts as a sealer so no need for anything else, this project is complete!

Project #3 – Wicker Basket w Handles
I picked this basket up at a local thrift store, I paid around $3 for it. The handles move up & down which is perfect for decorating purposes.
Due to water spots & parts of the basket having discoloration, it needs a refresh. Instead of painting the basket, I wanted to see if applying white wax would help even it out & allow it to keep a natural look.
Amaz
It’s m\amazing what a coat or two of white wax can do for a basket. It gave a more even outlook, sealed the surface & smoothed out some of the dry rougher areas. Plus It now has a softer, slightly aged look.
Materials & tools I used for this DIY
- DIY white wax
- Round wax brush (my favorite one)
